Q. ARE CHILDREN ALLOWED?

Yes, of course, kids love staying in our tipis! Children 12 and under stay free, over 13 will be considered as an adult.

Please remember that it can be a harsh climate at times and the property has many rocks and uneven surfaces to walk on. Staying in a tipi may not be suitable for children under 2.

Q. DO the tipis HAVE AC / HEAT?

Yes they do, however, please note that tipis are not a sealed or insulated environment you should still consider your stay as a “glamping” experience that does not include traditional air conditioning or heat.

In the summer months, along with one large fan in each tipi we also have a 14,000 BTU portable air conditioner. We have found that these are best run over night when the temperatures drop below 95. Higher temps result in the units blowing hot air.

In the colder months we provide small space heaters, electric blanket, and extra blankets in each tipi along with a down comforter on the queen bed.

We urge you to be reasonable about your personal expectations regarding comfort in a tipi.  If the Tipis do not seem like a good fit for you, please check availability in our Casa Shangri-La which includes traditional AC/heat.  Please note that we do not issue refunds due to weather or personal discomfort because of the temperature. Please check the weather forecast prior to booking.

Please visit our Tipi know How page HERE for more detailed information on staying in a tipi.

Q. does the tipi get wet inside if it rains?

As beautiful as our tipis are, it can be easy to forget you are in a canvas room which is also, by design, slightly open at the top where the poles stick out.  In rare cases of heavy rain and wind it can sometimes drip down the poles and into the tipi. Rain tarps are provided and kept underneath the bed and can be used to cover the bed and/or your valuables.

Q. DO YOU PROVIDE FIREWOOD?

Each tipi has its own private fire pit and we try to have bundles on site during the cold months. They can be purchased on site, $20/bundle, cash only. Firewood can be also be purchased at the small firewood stand on the corner of FM 170 and the Ghost Town Rd., or at the Cottonwood General Store on Hwy 118 in Study Butte (about 5 miles away). The Cottonwood is also the place to stock up on other supplies you may need.

Q. What places are available to eat?

Venga Cafe, Starlight Theater, DB’s Rustic Iron BBQ, and High Sierra Bar & Grill are located in the Ghost Town across from the Roost. La Kiva, Chili Pepper Cafe, El Gordo, and Rio Bravo Food Trucks are all about 5 miles back towards Hwy 118 in Study Butte. Long Draw Pizza is just 3 miles west of the roost.

Q. How do I join the TERLINGUA DRINKING TEAM?

Great question! Chances are if you've drank a beer on "the porch", sucked down a mind eraser at La Kiva, or visited any of our local liquor establishments, you can consider yourself on the "team". But you can continue to show your team spirit by purchasing one of our Terlingua Drinking Team shirts from our shop right here on this site or in person at Venga Cafe located at the entrance to the Ghost Town.
